Department of Software Systems and Technologies

Our mission

The mission of the Department of Software Systems and Technologies is to train specialists who are able to create high-quality software, work with future technologies, act responsibly in the context of digital transformation and develop software engineering as an important component of modern science and economics.

We strive to form an educational environment in which higher education students learn to think systematically, act professionally, explore boldly and create solutions that have practical, scientific and social value.

The Department of Software Systems and Technologies is a space where software engineering becomes the foundation of innovation, intelligent systems and the digital future.

Department today

Department of Software Systems and Technologies is an educational and scientific center of the Faculty of Information Technologies of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, where classical university education, modern software engineering, fundamental research and practical experience of the IT industry are combined.

The department trains specialists in the specialty Software Eng.« at three levels of higher education: OS bachelor, OS master and OS doctor of philosophy (postgraduate). The educational process is aimed at forming a new generation of engineers, researchers and technological leaders capable of creating reliable, secure, intelligent and scalable software systems.

Today, the department provides a full cycle of training in software engineering – from the first year of undergraduate study to the completion of dissertation research at the Ph.D. level.The training is designed so that higher education students gradually move from the fundamental foundations of programming, mathematics and algorithms to the design of complex software architectures, intelligent systems, computer vision, cyber defense, quantum algorithms and research projects.

We teach not only programming, we form engineering thinking, research culture, the ability to work with complex systems, make informed decisions in conditions of uncertainty and create software solutions that have real value for science, business, the state and society.

The peculiarity of the department lies in the combination of three components:

  • strong fundamental training;
  • modern engineering practice;
  • involvement of higher education students in real scientific and applied research.

This is what allows our higher education students not only to master individual technologies, but also to understand the principles of creating software systems that can work in complex, dynamic and often unpredictable conditions.

The team.

The department has a professional team of teachers, including professors, associate professors, assistants, doctors and candidates of sciences, heads of scientific projects, authors of training courses and specialists with practical experience in the field of information technology.

The department is headed by Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Oleksiy BYCHKOV, Laureate of the State Prize of Ukraine in the field of science and technology, scientist, teacher, head of research initiatives and founder of the scientific school of the department.

Teachers of the department combine the academic tradition of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv with modern approaches to software development. They create author's courses, prepare textbooks, manage student research, participate in scientific projects and maintain a constant connection with the development of the IT industry.

Study programmes

The department provides training in educational programs in software engineering at all levels of higher education.

Bachelor's educational and professional program provides systematic training for future software engineers. Higher education students master programming, algorithms and data structures, object-oriented design, databases, Web technologies, software system architecture, testing, team development, software security, and the basics of working with intelligent technologies.

Master's Degree Programme in Education and Science is focused on in-depth professional and research training. It provides an opportunity to specialize in the areas of intelligent systems programming, computer vision, quantum programming and other modern branches of software engineering.

Educational and scientific program OS Doctor of Philosophy provides for an individual research trajectory, work on topical scientific issues, participation in scientific seminars, publication activity and independent dissertation research.

The educational programs of the department are aimed at training specialists who are able to:

  • design and implement complex software systems;
  • work with modern languages, platforms and development tools;
  • apply methods of artificial intelligence, machine learning and computer vision;
  • create secure, reliable and scalable software;
  • work in teams and manage program projects;
  • conduct research in the field of software engineering and information technology.

All programs are accredited BY NACE.

Science & Research

An important component of the department's activities is the development of the scientific school «Mathematical Theory of Intellect», founded by the professor Oleksii BYCHKOVYI. Her research is formed at the intersection of fuzzy mathematics, possibility theory, hybrid dynamic systems, intelligent agents, and modern programming.

The key scientific results of the school include the development of possible-needed analysis models, approaches to the functional stability of software, concepts for the application of the theory of capabilities in the attention mechanisms of neural networks, as well as author's approaches to the programming of multi-agent systems.

The scientific activity of the department has both fundamental and applied significance. Its results are used to solve decision-making problems under conditions of uncertainty, design resilient software systems, model the intelligent behavior of agents, develop machine learning technologies, and create next-generation software solutions.

Key results of the school:

  • The (PN)model of possible-needed analysis is a theoretical alternative to Kolmogorov's probability theory and Dempster-Schafer's theory for decision making problems. Solves known paradoxes (Zade, Dubois-Prada);
  • The theory of stability of hybrid automata is a study of the stability of continuous-discrete systems. The basis for building adaptive artificial intelligence;
  • Functional stability — an approach to the design of systems that must continue to work correctly in conditions of partial failures;
  • Possibilistic Attention Mechanism (Pam) — a new concept of the attention mechanism in neural networks based on the theory of possibilities;
  • Programming of multi-agent systems on Rust is the author's approach of the department, reflected in the training course and manual.

In total, more than 2,000 scientific papers have been published in the history of the department, of which more than 400 are indexed in Scopus. The department publishes author's textbooks: «Programming on C#», «Multi-agent systems on Rust», a monograph on the theory of possibilities, “Programming in Java” and many others . Everything is available in library of the department.

The department conducts research in a number of topical areas that determine the development of modern software engineering and information technology:

  • theory of Opportunity, Fuzzy Mathematics, and Uncertainty Modeling;
  • cyber-physical systems;
  • hybrid dynamic systems, automata and formal models of program behavior;
  • multi-agent systems, intelligent agents and distributed programming;
  • machine learning, deep neural networks and computer vision;
  • software security and reliability of software systems;
  • quantum computing, quantum algorithms, and new programming paradigms.

The department creates author's educational materials, textbooks, manuals and monographs that support the educational process and scientific work of higher education students and teachers.

International Cooperation

The Department of Software Systems and Technologies is actively developing international academic cooperation, in particular within the framework of the program Erasmus+. Partnerships with European universities open up opportunities for higher education students and teachers to academic mobility, participation in joint research initiatives, inter-university educational projects and international scientific dialogue.

Among the partner institutions are universities in Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Poland and Germany. Such cooperation contributes to the integration of the department into the European educational and scientific space, strengthening the international visibility of research and expanding the opportunities for professional development of education seekers.

The department maintains academic ties through the Erasmus+ program with universities:

Higher education applicants participate in international academic exchanges and joint research projects.

students of higher education

Graduate students of the department are an active community of future software engineers, researchers and developers who participate in scientific competitions, hackathons, conferences, research projects and international initiatives.

They win prizes in all-Ukrainian competitions of scientific works, publish research results in professional publications, work on innovative software solutions and join real technological projects. Graduates of the department successfully work in leading Ukrainian and international IT companies, develop their own startups, hold technical and managerial positions, and continue their academic careers in Ukraine and abroad.
